                                           The greatest sporting festival in the Americas

About  6,000 athletes from 42 countries will take part in the Pan- American Games in Guadalajara.

The event will begin on October 14 and Brazil will be sending its best athletes.

The Pan-American Games are like a big party. A party that will begin on October 14 and end on October 30. Only countries from the American continent can take part. About 6,000 athletes from 42 countries will compete for medals in 44 sports. This will be the 16^th edition of the Games. The USA has won first place in the medals table in 13 of the 15 previous editions (in only two editions did the Americans come in second, in 1951 and 1991). Brazil's performance has improved in the last two Games. In 2003, Brazil won 123 medals - 29 of them gold. In the 2007 Pan-American Games, in Rio, Brazil broke its record for medals, winning 157 in total, with 52 gold medals. But even so, it ranked third, behind Cuba, which won 59 gold medals.

Brazil is looking for medals in several sports - Brazil is a major world power in sports like volleyball, beach volleyball and soccer, both in men’s and women’s events. However, over the 15 editions of the Pan-American Games, the most successful sports for Brazil have been athletics, swimming, judo and sailing. In addition to these, Brazil has a good chance of winning medals in several other sports. The Brazilian delegation includes some Olympic and World Champions, such as César Cielo, Maurren and Fabiana Murer.

Tributes for “visionary” Steve Jobs

The visionary who co-founded Apple, died Wednesday , October 5,  at age 56, after a long battle against pancreatic cancer

       Steve Jobs changed the way we use technology. He changed the daily habits of millions by reinventing computing, music and mobile phones. He moved technology from garages to pockets, took entertainment from discs to bytes and turned gadgets into extensions of the people who use them. His death sparked an outpouring of tributes as world leaders, business rivals and fans alike lamented his premature passing and celebrated his monumental achievements. Thousands of celebrities and ordinary people went on Facebook, Twitter and YouTube to record their tributes and memories of the man behind products such as the iPod, the iPhone, the iPad.

    President Barack Obama said Wednesday night that the "world has a lost a visionary" with the passing of Apple founder Steve Jobs. "Steve was among the greatest of American innovators - brave enough to think differently, bold enough to believe he could change the world, and talented enough to do it," the president said in a statement. "He transformed our lives, redefined entire industries, and achieved one of the rarest feats in human history: he changed the way each of us sees the world," Mr Obama said.
      Apple has posted this statement on its website: “Apple has lost a visionary and creative genius, and the world has lost an amazing human being. Those of us who have been fortunate enough to know and work with Steve have lost a dear friend and an inspiring mentor. Steve leaves behind a company that only he could have built, and his spirit will forever be the foundation of Apple.”

Amy Winehouse: Tributes paid to dead singer

   The music world has been paying tribute to singer Amy Winehouse, 27, who has been found dead at her London home. Her former producer Mark Ronson said: "She was my musical soulmate and like a sister to me. This is one of the saddest days of my life." Comedian and actor Russell Brand posted a statement on his website, saying: "We have lost a beautiful and talented woman."

Police said the cause of Winehouse's death was as yet unexplained. The Brit and Grammy award-winner had struggled with drink and drug addiction and had recently spent time in rehab. A statement from the Winehouse family said: "Our family has been left bereft by the loss of Amy, a wonderful daughter, sister, niece.

"She leaves a gaping hole in our lives. We are coming together to remember her and we would appreciate some privacy and space at this terrible time."      TV presenter Kelly Osbourne tweeted: "i cant even breath right now im crying so hard i just lost 1 of my best friends. i love you forever Amy & will never forget the real you!"

    Rolling Stone Ronnie Wood dedicated his Saturday night show on Absolute Radio to Winehouse. He said: "It's a very sad loss of a very good friend I spent many great times with." He said a reunion performance by his former group, The Faces, in Hurtwood, Surrey, would also be dedicated to the singer. Winehouse made her last public appearance on Wednesday night when she joined her goddaughter, Dionne Bromfield, on stage at The Roundhouse in Camden.

Expressões idiomáticas americanas

Make do, os americanos utilizam essa expressão quando usam alguma coisa para um determinando fim, embora não seja exatamente o que eles precisam. É isso mesmo, o make do é o nosso bom e velho “quebra galho”. Exemplo: We don’t have a stapler here, can you make do with some scotch tape? (Nós não temos grampeador aqui, dá pra quebrar o galho com durex?)

Make fun of, eu já assisti a alguns vídeos onde os americanos tiram sarro do sotaque dos canadenses, não sei afirmar se isso acontece com freqüência. Podemos dizer o seguinte, Americans used to make fun of the Canadian accent. (Os americanos costumam tirar sarro do sotaque canadense.)

Make ends meet, se o sujeito não paga as contas em dia, ele é caloteiro mesmo ou ele não é capaz de saldar suas dívidas com o salário que ganha. A expressão Make ends meet pode ser entendida como “ser capaz de pagar as contas com o que se ganha”. Exemplo: I wonder how John manages to make ends meet on such a low salary! (Não sei como John consegue pagar as contas com um salário tão baixo.)

Cost an arm and a Leg, mais uma vez a questão cultural faz a diferença. Assim como um “mar de rosas” em inglês é uma “cama de rosas” (a bed of roses), algo que custa caro, ou seja, “custa os olhos da cara”,  em inglês “custa um braço e uma perna” (cost an arm and a leg). Exemplo: These opera tickets cost us an arm and a leg!

Deliver the goods, quando uma pessoa dá conta de determinada tarefa, esta pessoa “delivers the goods”. Exemplo: “Watch out for Dylan”, John advised Carl. “He’s a great talker but he doens’t always deliver the goods”. A tradução fica assim: “Cuidado com Dylan”, John aconselhou Carl. “Ele é bom de papo, mas nem sempre cumpre o prometido”.

Dirt cheap, quando nós vamos a uma liquidação o nosso objetivo é comprar as coisas dirt cheap, ou seja, muito barato, ou quase de graça. Exemplo: I bought a car last weekend. It was dirt cheap!

In left field, é uma expressão que vem de um dos jogos mais populares dos EUA, o Baseball. Significa ter idéias que não são normais, na verdade, um pouco malucas. Ex: My friend is out in left field. (Meu amigo tem idéias estranhas / anormais.)

Throw a curveball, outra expressão que vem do Baseball. Significa surpreender alguém com uma situação difícil, complicada. Ex.: She really threw me a curveball! There goes all my planning! (Ela realmente me deixou em uma situação complicada! Lá se vão todos os meus planos.)

Get out of hand, imagine que você está dando uma festa (throwing a party) e de uma hora para outra, começa uma briga. Voa cadeira para todo lado. Você pode dizer que a festa got out of hand, ou seja, saiu do controle.

Sell like hot cakes: se tem uma profissão que adora quando uma coisa “sells like hot cakes” é a profissão de vendedor. Em bom e velho Português, podemos traduzir essa expressão como “vender como água”. Exemplo: The book has only just been published and copies are already selling like hot cakes in both Britain and America. (O livro acabou de ser lançado e suas cópias já estão vendendo como água na Grã Bretanha e América).

Sleep like a dog: depois de todo o trabalho que tive com a mudança na semana passada, eu passei o final de semana dormindo como uma pedra. Em inglês, “dormir como uma pedra” ou dormir profundamente pode ser traduzido como sleep like a dog. Exemplo: I always sleep like a dog after a day of surfing (Eu sempre durmo como uma pedra depois de um dia de surfe);

Vanish into thin air: é muito estranho, eu tenho um dom incrível para perder as coisas, Durante a pintura da casa, as ferramentas desapareciam de repente e eu só as encontrava horas depois. Em inglês, desaparecer de repente pode ser dito desta forma vanish into thin air. Exemplo: My money gets spent so fast, it seems to vanish into thin air (Meu dinheiro é gasto tão rapidamente que parece desaparecer).
